15 ways to green your cleaning & housekeeping...
Easy wins to help work towards your green ambitions for accomodation providers or general common area maintainence.
- Optimise your cleaning products. Cut out the aerosols, ready made triggers and single small bottles and go to high grade dilutables that are toxin and phosphate free. Add your own water on site to save money, reduce delivery weight and cut down ordering.
- Buy 100% recycled pulp from UK waste paper tissue products for your toilet roll, tissues and hand towel needs. And if you use dispensers buy one's that cut out waste and offer simple maintenance and operation.
- you have no fine furniture stop buying polish products, instead damp dust with a Microfibre cloth.
- Stop buying glass cleaner, cut down on metal polishes etc and use a Microglass cloth it's also great for flat screen TV's and computers.
- Change your mop and bucket for a Microfibre flat mop pad that damp cleans into corners as good as you on your hands and knees with a towel.
- In fact did I mention........Take your yellow dusters, stocking net cloths, old tea towels, towel off cuts, old J cloths and anything else you've been wiping with and put them with the vertical string or cloth type mop heads and stick them in the recycling. - Change your laundry detergent to a phosphate free product.
- Train your staff in the cost and importance of water economy, house keepers can be the biggest wasters of water leaving taps running when cleaning bathrooms.
- Take out the automated aerosol air freshener units, stop using urinal cubes and look for the source of bad smells you will save money. If you want a pleasant smell buy water based products in recyclable refill bottles. If you have smelly men's toilets buy a Ureco for each urinal and save.
- Buy biodegradable refuse sacks and paper hygiene bags.
- Use refillable room complimentry bottles, avoid sachets and small bottles to waste.
- Install water saving devices in rooms.
- Use towel cards for guests to reduce laundry.
- Use cards to encourage guests to turn the heat down instead of opening a window.
- Share your supplies, talk to the Chef and see if there is any cross over on cleaning agents or ancilleries and see if you can share the products to reduce over stocking and use and help cash flow.
